In our 20’s
The first signs of aging normally start around the eyes with fine lines under the eyes. Fine lines also begin to form around the nose and the upper lip begins to sink.
The lack of sun protection in our youth speeds up the aging process. Sun damage forms deep inside, causing dark uneven tones on the outside.
In our 30’s
Our skin begins to lose volume and elasticity. Fine, vertical lines deepen from facial expressions like laugh lines around the eyes, mouth and nose. Frown lines start to appear between our eyebrows. Our lips begin to lose volume.
From our 40’s on
Our skin continues to lose elasticity and volume as our collagen productions slows even more. Lines deepen into folds and wrinkles and we lose shape in our cheeks and jawline which causes our face look more drawn.

Many people complain that using a skin care regimen just takes too long. Caring for your skin doesn’t have to take up your whole evening. All you need are 4 simple steps to get you on your way to better skin, but first pick the right regimen for your skin type.
Step 1: Cleansing
You should wash your face twice a day but especially at night. Start with a gentle but effective cleansing product. During the cleansing phase you’re washing away makeup, dirt from day and your morning sunscreen all of which can clog your pores. Never use hot water as that can age and damage your skin.
Step 2: Toner
This is one step that isn’t understood and normally skipped. Take the extra 60 seconds to add this step to your routine. Toning removes the makeup, dirt and oil missed by every cleansing product. Toner also prepares your skin to absorb moisturizers.
Step 3: Moisturize
After you’ve washed and toned your face you should always apply moisturizer because the cleansing process strips away your vital oils. Using a moisturizer with SPF is highly recommended for your day time routine. You can use a night renewing cream in the evening to achieve the same effect without the SPF.
Step 4: Exfoliating
This is the easiest step because you only need to do it once a week. Pick a day where you might have an extra minute or so and stick to it. You can refer back to my earlier post that highlights the importance of exfoliating.
All of the steps above don’t need to take more than 5 minutes combined unless, you really want to pamper yourself and have time to enjoy the process.
About a year ago I decided to give up sugary drinks. For one, because I knew I needed to start drinking more water and two because I would rather eat my calories than drink them. I love lemons and I knew they were good for you so I started drinking lemon water.
This morning when I was making my lemon water I realized that lemons weren’t just a great way to detox your body or help curb your appetite but they are also great for your skin. You may or may not have heard that lemon juice mixed with sugar makes a good face scrub. It’s refreshing, I’ve tried it but it’s not the best route and can be harsh on your skin. Anyway, the real benefit of drinking lemon water is getting an extra daily boost of vitamin C. We all want to protect our skin from aging and vitamin C delivers antioxidants that help with collagen production and skin cell repair. A great reason to drink more water.
How often do you exfoliate? Oh, never? When I first learned more about exfoliating it was like an ahh-ha moment, it made perfect sense. Your skin cells are constantly dying. As you age the dead skin cells don’t slough off as naturally as they did when you were younger. Over time your skin begins to look dull from the build up. I know, it sounds kind of gross to think of all those layers of dead skin just building up on your face. Hence, no more young beautiful glow. Exfoliating is the solution to removing those dead cells.
You’ll want to find an exfoliating product rich in skin healing nutrients with the right mixture of granulation. Always start with freshly washed skin then gently begin scrubbing in a circular motion to rub away the dead skin cells. When you rinse away the exfoliator you’ll notice fresh, glowing skin.
You don’t want to exfoliate too frequently because it can leave your skin feeling sensitive or even raw if you over do it. Using your scrub once a week will do the trick. Exfoliation will remove all those nasty dead skin cells but it also strips away your natural oil. Now that you have that fresh skin exposed you’ll want to immediately apply hydration and moisturizer. Oh, and never forget sunscreen.
I can’t tell you how many times I hear “I’m too tired to wash my face at night.” I cringe internally but smile outwardly because I have a helpful solution. I get it, washing your face is the last thing you want to do when you’ve falling asleep on the couch, wake up and then drag yourself to your bed.

I don’t know about you but the first thing I do when I get home in the evening is change into something comfortable. Take 5 more minutes to wash your face and apply your skin care routine. You’ll feel clean and refreshed for the rest of your nightly activities and your skin will thank you.
